Bagaevskaya Capel is a small chapel located at the Bagaevskaya ferry crossing on the right bank of the Don near the village of Zadonsky (Bombay), which is part of the Bagaevskaya rural settlement. Coordinates of the chapel are as follows: 47.323245 degrees of North Latitude and 40.341333 degrees of East latitude. It is a sightseeing of the Bagaevskaya district.
History of creation: The Don River regularly changed its course, which forced most of the Lower Cossack settlements to change repeatedly their location[1]. “In 1800 — 1805, the River (Don) straightened up from the base of the island, divided the town (Bagai) into two parts: the right and left sides. About two centuries have passed since that time. The town on the Old Don on the left bank has been forgotten. The Old Don has ceased … But the (the right) half of the town is still remembered until today and it is being spoken about as the settlement on the right side of the Don … There is also a cemetery in the village. Every year during the river flood the bank of the river was washed away and went to the right side, washing out the remains of the burials. Cossacks carried the grave plates of their ancestors further from the shore. And in 1912 one of these plates was taken further away to a high bank, and on the place where it was laid, the chapel of a church architecture was built. It was built in honor of the centenary of the Cossacks participation in the defeat of the army at Borodino and in memory of the village, once located on the right side of the Don (some old-timers said that the chapel was built … in honor of the three hundredth anniversary of the Romanovs’ house in 1913)[2]. Despite the analytic researches of local history experts [3] and the publication of Rostov historians[4][5] modern Bagaev inhabitants still associate the ancient village and its predecessor, the Cossack town of Bagai precisely with the location of the Bagaevskaya chapel.
Destruction: In the 1960s, an old chapel was destroyed, and in 1964 a virgin soil around it was plowed[6].
Recovery:
Within the framework of social changes and in conditions of intense election campaign on the cusp of the 20th and 21st centuries, a “new-house” chapel was constructed, which, however, is rarely used for its religious purpose[7] .
